Chapter Three
He couldn’t believe he got an answer so quickly. More than that, Andrew couldn’t believe that Ashley had said yes. He had done his part, buying the ticket for the train and paying for it. Now he had to wait almost eight weeks to finally meet his bride. They were to be married when she arrived before another long winter, Andrew wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.
Andrew felt like his luck was going to change. He slept better at night, knowing that Ashley was on her way. The days were filled with work to get ready for winter, but also wondering what she would be like, what she would look like. He tried to imagine her in his head, but there was really nothing that he had to go off of. There had been no mention of what she looked like, and he would just have to wait.
The man thought the time would go by slowly, but it was quickly turning fall, and her arrival was fast approaching. He made all of the arrangements to have them married the same day that she arrived. Ashley wouldn’t be able to live with him until they were married and Andrew didn’t want to wait. She would be his wife, no matter who she was, so there was no point in putting it off. He had been lonely too long, and there was nothing more that he cared about than that.
When the day finally arrived, he tried not to let his nerves take over. Andrew had just hired two new farmhands to help with the cattle and the other duties of the ranch because it was becoming just too much for him.
It wouldn’t take but a few hours to be married, but there were preparations to be made and the work never stopped. He made quite a nice bit when he sold some of his steers at the auction, and the extra money was for a dress he had to pick up at the seamstress in town and to add to the house. He had added an extra bedroom. While he liked to think that everything would go perfectly, he knew that there was a chance she would need time before she would want to share a room and a bed with him. Andrew was under the assumption that he had thought of everything, but it didn’t help his worry of everything being perfect for Ashley.
His hands shook as they held his hat in his hands a time later. All he could think about was about what he would do when he met her. How was it supposed to work? She had told him to look for her in a bright blue dress. It made his eyes scan the people getting off the locomotive that was sitting idle on the platform. He couldn’t see her, and Andrew was starting to worry that maybe she hadn’t come. Maybe she had gotten nervous and backed out before getting on the train.
Then he saw her as one of the last passengers coming off of the train.
